A large and well known Communication Equipment Manufacturer selects hr TEAM for training programme on managing remote teams and flexible working

To provide an overall positioning for training in leading in remote and flexible working environments we introduce two key themes...

(1) Same Skills

The skills required for leading and managing in a remote environment are essentially the same as those required for working in a traditional, office based, "same time same place" environment

What changes is the context. The objective is to demystify the subject and send the message that the skills and experience people already have need to be applied in a different way.

(2) Mindset Shift

For many managers one of the biggest challenges is more about being able to "shift mindset" rather than acquiring new skills. For managers used to managing in an office environment, the move to managing "people you cannot see" represents significant change. This often requires a change of attitudes and beliefs about what the leadership/ management role is about.

  For example, a close supervisory approach is undesirable [in the majority of situations] in a traditional office based situation. When faced with managing people who will not be office based for up to 60% of the working week then the close supervision approach is not possible. Managers need to be able to become "Boundary managers".

  The programme begins by asking lots of questions and raising issues in areas such as;

  • How is managing in a remote/ flexible working environment different?
  • What are the opportunities and challenges?
  • A leader/ manager framework set in the context of remote/ flexible working
  • How to establish a "team code" for how we are going to work together in a new and different environment
  • Communication and influencing styles to employ when agreeing the code
  • The importance of communication when flexible working is implemented
  • How to balance the operational, team and individual factors - i.e. effects/ implications on operations and the team of remote working
  • Making the most of team meetings and "in office days" to develop the team effectiveness in the new environment
  • The need for and importance of providing support to staff when they move to remote working. What issues could they face?
  • Generally staff see all of the benefits of being a home worker. This rose tinted approach hides the potential downsides and pitfalls.

The programme uses a range of learning mechanisms including;

  • Self study module
  • Practical workshop
  • Completion of skills profile/assessment
  • Review session 6 weeks later
  • Nomination of live situtations/cases
  • Coaching support
