I started my career in the mid seventies working in the electricity supply industry. It proved a great learning ground as I worked in almost all departments over a 13 year period, ranging from cost accounting, engineering support, retailing, customer service, stock management and personnel, through to debt recovery.
Following personal career consultancy I decided to make a major career shift and moved into high street retailing, becoming the training and personnel manager for Early Learning Centre. As a member of the senior management team my key responsibilities were all aspects of training, development and personnel, plus shop administrative support. In my last 18 months with ELC I also assumed responsibility for Customer Services. Examples of my achievements are:
- Introduced performance management framework enabling measurement culture
- Halved staff turnover by developing structured training programmes for induction and selection interviewing
- Developed competence model for store management and an assessment centre to benchmark staff for development priorities
- Improved store service levels by over five percentage points
- Introduced Executive Development programme for senior management
I have an HND in Business Studies, am a qualified psychometric tester and an NLP Practitioner.
